South Manitou Light Station

As part of the 2010 Great Lakes Lighthouse Preservation Conference, we traveled out to South Manitou Island on June 16th to see the island and light station.  It is a wonderful island and light station complex and well worth the trip.  The structures are maintained by the National Park Service as part of the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore.  The keeper’s dwelling is not open to the public, but we were fortunate enough to have it opened for us for a tour.
